How save percentage is calculated

Subtract goals against from shots against to get saves, then divide saves by shots against:

save % = saves ÷ shots = 28 ÷ 30 = .933

Save percentage is written to three decimals with no leading zero, so .933 rather than 0.933, and it is read aloud as "nine thirty-three". Empty net goals are not included: the goalie is off the ice, so it was never a shot against them.

What is a good save percentage?

The NHL average in 2025-26 was .896. Among goalies with at least 20 games the range ran from .860 to .921, so anything above .910 is a quality starter. You can see where any goalie sits on the NHL leaderboard.

Do empty net goals count against save percentage?

No. An empty net goal is scored with the goalie off the ice, so it is not a shot against them and does not affect their save percentage.

Save percentage vs save ratio

Take the same saves and divide them by goals against instead of shots against to get save ratio:

save ratio = saves ÷ goals = 28 ÷ 2 = 14.0

Save percentage divides saves by shots, so it answers how often the puck is stopped; save ratio divides saves by goals, so it answers how many saves a goalie makes for every goal they allow:
